  • About the author

"The greatest compliment I have ever received about my writing was from a fan who told me that I’m a ‘real woman’s woman,’" says author Robyn Carr. "I try to write about issues that every woman faces at some point in her life, without ever losing sight of the basic sense of humour that helps us all through hard times."

The author of over 15 novels and five screenplays, Robyn’s work reaches a wide audience. In addition to her touching novels, she’s written historical romance, series romance, and a gripping thriller. "This is the best job I’m ever going to get wearing my nightgown!" she says of her writing career.

Robyn got a kick out of writing her latest novel, Deep in the Valley, the first of what she hopes will be an ongoing series about life in the small town of Grace Valley, California. "I have an affinity for small-town life," says the author, "and I find that when I’m writing about life in a close-knit community like Grace Valley, the town becomes more than just a setting — it evolves into a character in its own right."

To research Deep in the Valley, the author travelled back to Mendocino County in Northern California; Carr and her family had called nearby Sacramento, California, home for several years. While there, she interviewed a variety of people, including local vintners, artisans, authors, and farmers. She even spoke to the local sheriff’s department about the mysterious marijuana farmers making their living in the hills above the valley.

"It’s amazing," she relates, "in contrast to the quiet and peaceful countryside, army helicopters swoop suddenly across the hills, working with the DEA to locate the illegal operations hidden deep in the mountain forests"

Originally from Minnesota, Robyn and her family have seen much of the country thanks to her husband, Jim, and his career in aviation. After the two high school sweethearts married, Jim joined the air force during the Vietnam War. They’ve lived in Texas, Florida, California, and Arizona. The couple recently moved to Henderson, Nevada, so Jim could explore a new business opportunity. "At first, being a Great Plains girl at heart, I said, ‘Oh no, another desert!’ It didn’t take me long to fall in love with the beauty of Nevada — and the unrivaled spectacle of nearby Las Vegas"

Now that Robyn’s children are grown — and finally out of the house — she has the luxury of developing hobbies for the first time in her life. "I didn’t realise that a person could have hobbies other than laundry until my kids grew up," she jokes. With watercolours, quilting, and gardening as new special interests, she staunchly defends her new hobbies when her daughter asks her why she’s waited so long to become domestic. "Cleaning is domestic," she says. "I’m just expressing more of my artistic personality!"
